Zoey Frank, online figure painting classes

I hope you are all safe and healthy. I am offering a series of online classes for the first time. I’m hoping we that can stay connected from afar and come together to study something uplifting and engaging while we are in our homes.

Online Sketchbook Workshop:
Part I: Multiple Figure Composition: Studies of Historical Paintings

April 10, 17, 21, May 1
Fridays, 10am-12pm Mountain Time
$175 for 4 week course

In this online four-week course we will analyze paintings from art history and make small master copies in our sketchbooks. Each week I will give a slide lecture focusing on how the formal elements of a painting such as space, value, and color can be used to convey meaning and narrative. We will look at the story that each historical painting is based on as the starting point to investigate how the painting was built, how each element of the painting inextricably contributes to the strength of the whole.

In part II of this class we will use these principles to build our own multifigure compositions.

How this will work:
We will meet live on Zoom for two hours 10am -12pm Mountain Time on Fridays. Each class will be recorded and available for participants to watch later if you are unable to join at that time.

Each class will include a slide lecture, demo, and Q & A or discussion.

A master copy assignment will be given with each class for you to work on during the week (1-2 hours). You will be invited to post these assignments in a closed Facebook group where I will give feedback on the work before the next class. You will all be able to see everyone’s feedback and can contribute your ideas as well.

Figure Painting V: Narrative/Multiple Figure Composition $525

Thursday, November 12, 2020 10:00 AM
Sunday, November 15, 2020 5:00 PM

Zoey Frank’s Studio – Fort Collins, CO, USA

In this workshop we will use multiple photo references to build our paintings. We will look to historical paintings as a starting point to structure the space and relationships between the figures. We will make small studies to work out a composition and then take reference photos to get more solid visual information as reference for the painting. Internet image searches will also be fair game for adding spaces, objects or figures to the painting.

Figure Painting IV: Figure in Context

Friday, September 25, 2020 10:00 AM
Sunday, September 27, 2020 5:00 PM

Zoey Frank’s Studio – Fort Collins, CO, USA

In this experimental workshop will explore different ways that the figure can interact with the environment. Working from observation we will look at the big picture and spatial relationships that situate a figure in context. We will discuss how the figure can either function as the focal point or be subdued to fit within an overarching motif. Can we shift our color or value scale to affect how the figure sits in space? Use pattern or light to redirect our eye? Distort our drawing of the figure? Working from observation in oils, we will make a series of small painted studies to try out different compositions, and then work on one larger exploratory painting over the 3 days. Focus will be placed on finding value and color relationships that build a complete image. The course will be taught through lecture, demonstration and individual critique. $425, model fee included.
