Derek Overfield – Bold life drawings of Olympic athletes

My work has always been influenced by the potential of the human body.

Athletes, in particular, are an inspiration to me – as they were to the ancient Greeks – in that they embody that perfect synthesis of body and mind. Their determination, focus, & prowess elevated them to a level of semi-divinity in the early days of the Olympic Games.

Stomios of Elis was the winner of the pentathlon (5 events consisting of short foot race, javelin thrown, long jump, wrestling and discus throw) in the Olympic games of 376 BC.
