Rainer Kurka, painted terracotta sculptures

RAINER KURKA began sculpting in stone at the age of 15. After his studies of architecture in Darmstadt and Florence, he worked as an assistant professor at the Department of Sculptural Design at the Technical University of Darmstadt. In 2009, he moved to Berlin to establish himself as a freelance sculptor. Kurka's preferred materials for his figurative sculptures are terracotta and bronze, which he often paints, thus creating an almost lifelike appearance. His works have been shown at various international exhibitions and are part of the collections of several museums.

Kurka's sculptural works are influenced by his personal studies of classical and contemporary sculpture, as well as his observations of people in everyday life. His painted terracotta sculptures appear to the viewer as seemingly real people of our time.

However, they arise from the artist's imagination without a specific model and then evolve independently during the modelling process. With their clear forms, his sculptures combine the poetry of the fleeting moment with an aura of timelessness.
