Peter Kennelly is a contemporary figurative artist living and working in London.
His paintings cover many topics related to Englishness, touching on magic realism and often with a nightmarish element to them. The work is highly narrative. His vision of life is fused together, creating surreal worlds that are often impossible to place in time.
Inspiration is taken from the absurdity of the human condition; the east end of London where he grew up being particularly referenced.
The paintings draw on Kennelly’s obsessions and preoccupations, portraying characters in a humorous and satirical way, and often something much darker and more ominous through the many layers of metaphorical symbolism.
