Joseph Lauer, painting America’s Heartland

Joseph-Lauer-Body-and-Soul, farm portraits

“My paintings focus on my life experiences growing up on a small farm in the heartland of America. Typically these works depict vast expanses, farm fields, and straightforward portraiture of family members, animals, and machinery. In my recent work, I’m also experimenting with new symbolic forms, both man-made and natural, that represent different aspects of Middle-American culture. I’m interested in the story these objects tell about the people and the environment they inhabit, and how it plays into our national identity.”
